10 Best Uses for Essential Oils (all natural, too!)
Have a problem? There’s an essential oil for that.
I came to love essential oils as soon as I had Nolan.I wanted to explore safe, natural options for my home and family. I started with the basic kit (lemon, lavender and peppermint) and now have a treasure trove of coveted oils I use every single day.
The hype is real & the oils sell themselves, truly. Bottom line— they work…really, really well.
To make your life easier, I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 uses for essential oils that are safe, natural and will make you feel amazing, I promise. Let’s begin….
1. Bug and tick spray
It’s almost mosquito season and this year has been a particularly wet one. I haven’t found anything that is as effective as lavender + lemongrass, or lavender all on its own. Here is a recipe I abide by….
2. Cleaning the house
There are a few different concoctions you can make here: all purpose cleaner, bathroom cleaner, linen spray and essential oils spritzed on some wool balls and thrown into the dryer.
All purpose cleaner
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1 1/2 cup water
- 10 drops tea tree oil
- 5 drops lavender or citrus blend (scent)
- DO NOT USE ON MARBLE OR TRAVERTINE
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1/4 cup liquid castile soap (I like unscented Dr. Bronners)
- 1 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp vinegar
- 5-10 drops lemon
Laundry – dryer sheet replacements
All natural / organic wool + 5 drops lavender
3. Soothe sore muscles
Have you heard of dōTERRA‘s Deep Blue Rub? If you haven’t you need to order a tube TODAY. It is a container of wintergreen amazing-ness and provides instant, long-lasting relief for sore muscles. I use it on my finger I nearly sliced off before doing PT exercises. Also included in the rub: Camphor, Peppermint, Blue Tansy, German Chamomile, Helichrysum, and Osmanthus
Yes, you can cook with essential oils! One of my friends known as The Poorganic Chef is a master of cooking and a wealth of knowledge when it comes to essential oils. He gave me a tip — a drop of oil of oregano (A LITTLE BIT GOES A REALLY LONG WAY!) in homemade spaghetti sauce…. uummm YES PLEASE!
You can also bake with essential oils. My friend and business partner in crime recently made strawberry lemonade yogurt bark with lemon essential oil and it tastes like everything good in this world.
5. Fight cold and flu symptoms
Now this post doesn’t rank the uses in any particular order, but fighting cold and flu symptoms HAS to be the reason why I converted from synthetic remedies to all natural essential oils. DoTERRA makes an amazing oil called ON GUARD we diffuse during play dates, when one or both of the kids are showing signs of sickness and to clean. ON GUARD and other immune-supporting blends (of any third party tested and quality ensured) of any brand really do the trick. That and a thick dose of probiotics!
6. Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
Just so you know, I think you are perfect just the way you are… BUT if you want to tighten your skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles consider using 1-2 drops of Frankincense neatly on your skin.
*Possible side effect: Experiencing euphoria because Frankincense smells absolutely intoxicating
7. Pet care
Fleas? Ticks? Stinky fur?
Your four legged BFF can benefit from the use of essential oils. Treat their coats with cedarwood, pat their paw pads with lavender for relaxation or make your own flea mixture to keep Fido healthy.
Ticks & fleas for your dog
- 1-2 drops lemongrass and eucalyptus in your dog’s shampoo
There are so many amazing, relaxing and invigorating blends of essential oils that can be diffused throughout your home. It is truly hard to go wrong. Diffusing essential oils works by distributing essential oil molecules into the air and throughout your home.
My favorite diffuser is the Housmil 350mL wood grain, cool mist diffuser pictured below. I used this code (U84XMIHG) to make it $11.48!!!
With any home-care option pick a blend that works best for your family. There are tons of Facebook groups out there that aid in picking the right blend that makes sense for your needs while keeping pets and young children’s respiratory safety in mind.
9. Therapeutic play dough
Yes, you read that correctly.
I want to get into this now, but in all honesty, I haven’t done it yet. Who wants to come over for a play date??
10. Roller bottles for on the go EO necessities
Making roller balls filled with fractionated coconut oil and delicious blends is one of my favorite things to do after teaching a class. I love getting my friends and essential-oil-lovers together to create some amazing on the go blends for ourselves and our kids!!
aren’t they beautiful?!?!
