🌲 Week 1 (ish)- Black Butte Ranch located in: Sisters, Oregon 🌲
When I was a child there was a place we went to every summer. My parents had gone since the beginning of my marriage and my dad long before he met my mom. This is a place where some of my memories of childhood are held nearest and dearest to my heart. As a parent you dream of a place like this; a place where your children walk, run and ride their bikes throughout the ranch without worrying about stranger danger, distracted drivers, highways or even busy roads. Here there is wildlife all around , yet modern conveniences like wifi, a general store and Dechutes beer on tap at all the ranch restaurants. The view here is simply breathtaking, so much so it takes a lot of effort to take a BAD picture.
This is a place where you can drink fresh water out of the tap, which to Arizonians is a real treat. There are fresh fruit and produce stands, friendly faces and immaculate golf courses…. Did I mention the thing about the view???
There is so much to do here. I’ve compiled a little snip-it into what we have been up to our first week here on the ranch — mostly through pictures 😜📸
☀️ June 23-July 4th 2016☀️
🚴🏻 Almost immediately we were going on bike rides. My parents “went into town” (Bend, Oregon) and got Nolan a brand new Avengers bike with training wheels. It took three days but now he is a complete master of the hill, Prince of pedaling and overall safe and polite gentleman on the bike trails. We do a 1.8 mile with him and it’s about all he has in his little legs.
The ranch has over 18 miles of paves bike trails that weave through the lush forest. If you bike during the early morning or dusk you’re almost guaranteed to see a doe or two.
🐿 Another fan favorite activity is our family “hike” to the head of the Metolius River where we feed the chipmunks like real tourists– it’s just about the only super tourist-y thing we do, so we embrace it 🤗 The hike is really a walk on paved ground and you can’t touch your hands into the river , but it’s still super beautiful and right across the street from the ranch which makes it a tolerable trip with Sir Screams-a-lot (Griffin hates the car seat 😭). Like I said, it’s SUPER touristy but 💁🏻
🚒. Every Wednesday the ranch has a firehouse tour for kids at their little station within the ranch. They have three trucks and two ambulances, a wildlife first response vehicle and super awesome firehouse we pretty much got a private tour of. There was only one family there the day we toured so we had the firefighters to ourselves. I can’t remember the firefighter who was Nolan’s guide that day but he was so kind and sweet… He even let Nolan climb into the back of the ambulance where Nolan proceeded to point out all of his owies asking for a bandage. Leave it to our son to really turn up the drama factor in front of his new idols 🚨
🐴Back on the ranch an activity I remember vividly is feeding the horses… Nolan has NO FEAR and these beautiful creatures have heads the size of his entire body. We take carrots and apples to the meadow (which is the most beautiful portion of the ranch in my opinion) and hope they are interested in coming up to us and taking a sweet snack. We are looking forward to getting Nolan into the saddle and going on his first ride , wish us luck on that one 😬
🇺🇸 The 4th of July is kind of a big deal at the ranch and it’s also one of the busiest days of the year. For the last 45 years black butte ranch has held the bicycle parade for the kids. They start decorating their bikes at the infamous Robert’s Pub and pedal their hearts out to the Lakeview pool where there is BBQ, a rock wall and games. It was so cute seeing all of the kids in their patriotic gear pedaling their hearts out to the finish line… We absolutely had a blast
Next week my sister comes with my brother in law and niece, so we are bound to have more adventures. We hope you keep checking in and come visit the beautiful ranch soon… Everyone should experience this raw, family friendly beauty at least once in a lifetime!!!!
